Myth: "There is no such thing as society"
The Myth
Thatcher denied the existence of society — proof of her hard-hearted individualism.
The Facts
The full 1987 Woman's Own quote argues the opposite: "There is no such thing as society. There are individual men and women and there are families." She was making the point that "society" cannot act — only the people inside it can, through family, neighbourhood and voluntary association. She was rejecting collectivist abstraction, not the existence of community.
