Simon Richards

We have lost a great friend and an inspiring influence.

The Margaret Thatcher Centre is profoundly shocked and saddened to announce the passing of our great friend, advisor and supporter, Simon Richards. Simon was a tireless champion of freedom, a dedicated Thatcherite, and a mentor to countless individuals in the conservative movement, including many of us at the Margaret Thatcher Centre. His quiet kindness and principled guidance touched so many lives, leaving an indelible mark on British politics.

Simon joined The Freedom Association in 1976 while still at school, shortly after its founding, and rose to become its Chief Executive until his retirement. A doughty defender of individual liberty, he co-launched the Better Off Out campaign in 2006, which played a pivotal role in the push for Brexit. Without him, Brexit would simply not have happened. During the EU referendum, he raised significant funds and strategically supported efforts such as ‘Labour Leave’ to sway key voters. He organised Freedom Festivals for the Freedom Association and the Freedom Zone at Conservative Party conferences, fostering open debate on free speech, free markets, and smaller government. As a classical liberal, Simon prioritised collegiate collaboration across political divides, always with an eye toward mentoring the next generation—often through student-focused initiatives and wise, unassuming counsel.

The outpouring of grief across the conservative community reflects the deep affection and respect Simon inspired. He was widely regarded as ‘the nicest man in British politics’, a great promoter of sound causes, a brave and fearless defender of freedom, a patriot and fierce protector of free speech, and a gracious and much loved soldier for freedom.

We all remember him for his exceptional kindness, cheerfulness and warmth, his innovative events such as pub quizzes and festivals, and the influential umbrella he provided for right-wing discourse. He was an early enthusiast for the Margaret Thatcher Centre, guiding and advising us as we set out to remind the world of the principles behind Thatcherism and the life of the Iron Lady whose leadership he so admired. We are sadly just beginning, through our shock, to realise what a void his loss creates.

Our founder, Donal Blaney, shared these heartfelt words: “I am beyond grief stricken tonight to learn that the nicest (and soundest) man in politics, and the true king of political mischief makers, Simon Richards has died. Ever encouraging, conspiratorial, utterly principled, and thoroughly decent. Smart and funny too with an infectious laugh. He was the activist’s activist. … God rest your soul, Simon. We will miss you more than words can say.”

Simon Richards embodied the values of freedom, decency, and quiet strength that defined Margaret Thatcher’s legacy. His contributions to Brexit, free speech, and conservative activism will endure. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends. Rest in peace, Simon.
